According to a consumer complaint survey report, the category most complained about by consumers in 2010 was the auto industry. The survey, carried out collectively by the Consumer Federation of America, the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators, and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators, looked at over half a million complaints in different states around the country. For a second year in a row, they found that automobile related problems topped the list. Some of the most complained about categories included misrepresentations in advertising or sales of new and used cars, lemon vehicles, faulty repairs, leasing and towing disputes.

Honda Civic Redesigned for 2012
Consumer Reports has always been a big fan of the Honda Civic, but as the new 2012 models roll of the assembly line, negative reviews may hurt the sales of one of the most popular cars in America. The Civic, usually ranking number one, fell to second last out of 12 compact cars. Consumer Reports found the 2012 Civic model to be less agile with lower interior quality than previous models. Testers also found that the vehicle suffers from a rough ride, long stopping distances and pronounced road noise. A full report of the top 12 cars will be in their upcoming September issue
Making Hybrid Vehicles Better With Ultra Capacitors
Ioxus, a start up company in Oneonta, N.Y., are experimenting with ultra capacitors in hybrid and electric vehicles in order to make batteries work better and last longer.
In order to improve fuel economy on hybrid and electric vehicles, the engine shuts down when the car stops. When the vehicle starts to move again, a large amount of power is needed. While lithium ion batteries can store large amounts of energy, they are not able to discharge quickly enough to get the vehicle going again. Lead acid batteries can deliver the power needed, but the life of the battery is sacrificed in the process.
Ioxus is using ultra capacitors to work with the battery, allowing the burst of energy needed to get the vehicle going and allowing quick recharging for the next stop. According to Mark E. McGough, the company’s chief executive, this technology could also be used to run an electrically driven power steering system, making hybrid and electric vehicles work even more efficiently. While this technology is not being used commercially on hybrid and electric vehicles, it has been proven to be very effective in turning the blades on wind turbines.
Carmageddon Urgeds LA Residents To Stay Home
The 405 freeway will be closed this weekend for about 53 hours as highway crews demolish the Mulholland Drive bridge. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villarigosa, urges residents to “stay home” as the work threatens to impede traffic near the Interstate, making some roads almost impassible. Motorists intent on commuting will see 61 buses added to the city’s transit system, and the subway systems will be prepared for higher ridership traffic. Other services offered include nonstop flights, offered by JetBlue, from Long Beach Airport to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, promoted as the “Fly Over the 405 promotion”, and Briles Wing and Helicopter Inc, will have charter flight services offering trips from Van Nuys Airport to either Los Angeles International or Santa Monica airports. For people or groups planning unauthorized runs of the closed freeway, the Los Angeles Police Department will be on hand to intercept this traffic. The closure, labeled as ‘Carmageddon’, hopes to lessen Los Angeles traffic in a $1.03 billion freeway widening project that will accommodate new carpool lanes by building a bigger bridge 200 feet to the south of the Mullholland bridge.
Ford Offers Better Fuel Economy With Google
Ford and Google are working together to develop a tool that will help make Ford’s hybrid vehicles even more efficient. The Application Program Interface (API), also known as Google Predictions, will analyze driver habits using cloud based computing, in order to come up with customized strategies for saving energy. The driver would input their destination and the car would use its stored traffic information to determine the best route. The API would adapt to the drivers driving habits allowing the best fuel efficiency for the driver. The technology is still in a research phase, but Ford hopes to have a working prototype ready for production in four to eight years.
Toyota To Offer Family Sized Prius
According to Ed LaRocque, Toyota’s U.S. marketing manager for advanced technology vehicles, Toyota’s new family sized Prius will be hitting the U.S. market this fall after delays due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Prius V is being targeted to young families offering versatility and more interior room than most small sport utility vehicles on the market. The company sees the Prius V competing against vehicles such as the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and the Volkswagen Jetta wagon. Toyota will also be offering a plug in version of the current Prius model early next year followed by a smaller version, known as the Prius C. Toyota has dominated the gasoline electric hybrid market since the Prius went on sale in the U.S. in 2000. The company hopes that Prius sales will eventually rival the sales of Toyota’s popular models like the Camry and Corolla sedans.

Car dealers looking to get their hands on well maintained used cars, especially fuel efficient ones, are willing to pay good money for it. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan continue to affect the supply of compact and hybrid cars, low car sales in 2008-2009, and automobile owners keeping their cars longer have also contributed to the lack of inventory. While the Toyota Prius seems to be the most sought after used car, a 2008 Honda Civic Lx price has increased by $2,000 since January, a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo Ls, by over $3,000, and a 2008 Ford Focus is worth about two thirds of its original sticker price .

Asleep Behind The Wheel Drowsy While Driving
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) drowsy driving results in 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and over 100,000 accidents each year. Drowsy driving is considered as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. It causes slower reaction times, vision impairment, lapses in judgment and delays in processing information. Still, over 50% of American drivers say that they drive while drowsy, and 28% admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel. According to a recent study by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), drowsy driving has become more of a problem than previously estimated.
This week is Drowsy Driving Prevention Week®, a NSF public awareness campaign to educate drivers about sleep safety. Drowsy driving is a year round problem with transport drivers pushed by deadlines and shift workers working odd hours, but during the summer, the problem gets even worse. People trying to make the most of their vacation tend to ignore the signs of fatigue, resulting in an increase in drowsy driving accidents on the road.
Automakers and independent electronics companies have come up with solutions to this problem ranging from simple head positioning monitors to integrated sensor systems. While both are effective, they do have their limitations and can be expensive. The makers of a new device called the Anti Sleep Pilot are taking a different, more affordable, approach to keeping drivers alert on the road. The Anti Sleep Pilot offers a standalone model as well as an IPhone app that requires regular input form the driver to ensure that they are alert. The device is constantly calculating the drivers personalized driving fatigue levels according to 26 different input parameters. It not only alerts drivers that they are falling asleep at the wheel, but was designed to prevent drivers from getting into a dangerous situation in the first place.
