Last month we learned that GM would be ending its joint venture, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., with Toyota. Toyota is now going to begin discussions towards dissolving the venture with the “Old GM.” Toyota has been examining the US market after auto sales have been on the down side. Toyota is carefully looking at their options for NUMMI.

Toyota has said that the labor costs are not competitive with other plants in the U.S. such as Georgetown, Kentucky. The UAW has said that part of the reason for the joint venture was to have American employees learn Toyota’s methods of production, which are more efficient.

California represents Toyota’s largest market in the United States. California senators and House members are communicating with Toyota to see is they can keep the plant from closing.

Earlier this week German media announced that Volkswagen is close to a deal to takeover Porsche. The deal is said to be in the neighborhood of $11 billion. The deal would be in two steps with VW initially purchasing 50% of Porsche and then they would acquire the remaining shares in a second step.

This would give Porsche and Piech family an ownership 50% of the shares in the newly merged VW-Porsche company. The lower state of Saxony would keep its 20% holding and this would make it possible for the emirate of Qatar to purchase some shares.

The Chrysler dealerships already closed on June 9, 2009 and the General Motors dealership will be closing in October 2010.

According to the New York Times, Federal agency researchers were going to do a study starting in 2003. They were going to study 10,000 drivers over a period of time to determine the risks by cell phone use in vehicles. But the study was never official because there was pressure about upsetting Congress. The former head of NHTSA said it was suggested that they only gather the data and withhold the research.

Hundreds of pages from the research are being made public today for the first time due to two consumer groups, Center for Auto Safety and Public Citizen.

The researchers estimated in 2002 that cell phones used by drivers caused about 955 fatalities and 240,000 accidents that year.

People say that by not publishing the findings, lives have been lost and the problem that we are looking at could be as bad as drunk driving!

It is a lot easier for California Police to ticket California drivers holding cell phones to their ears and not using a hands free device than to ticket a driver texting. It is estimated that over 200,000 tickets have been written in the past year to driver’s not using hands free devices while only a few hundred have been written to drivers either texting or being texted. The problem is that police officers have a hard time determining when texting is being done by a driver.
Officials are very concerned because texting is on the rise and is considered more distracting then talking on a cell phone. Please don’t text while you drive.

General Motor’s has a hit with its new Camaro. The latest edition is a reminder of the old Camaro’s in its heyday. With its long hood and lots of grill it’s bringing people back to the showrooms. The basic model has a 6 cylinder engine and is priced well. The Camaro made its debut in 1966 and was dropped from the lineup in 2002. GM sold 9,300 Camaros during the month of June and actually outsold its rival, the Ford Mustang that month.
