On Thursday night the Senate voted to extend the Cash for Clunkers Program. They will be making available another $2 billion for the program. The vote was 60-37 to go forward with the program.

The ten most popular vehicles sold through the “Cash for Clunkers Program were: Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius, Ford Escape, Toyota Camry, Dodge Caliber, Hyundai Elantra, Honda Fit, and the Chevrolet Cobalt. This list was published by NHTSA Administration.
Distracted Driving Summit
It was announced by the secretary of transportation, that he will be holding a summit to discuss the dangers of driving and multitasking. The meeting is tentatively scheduled to be held in September and will bring together safety experts, elected officials, police, academics, and others. The federal government does not usually pass laws governing behavior behind the wheel, but can make it a condition for receiving highway aid. Several senators have suggested withholding federal highway money from states that do not ban texting while driving. Currently 14 states are in compliance.

Car Sales for July, 2009
Cars and light truck sales were up for the month of July. The Cash for Clunkers Program is credited with giving auto makers a boost. The White House has guaranteed the program through Friday, but the continuation of the program depends on the Senate vote.
General Motors sold 187,582 vehicles, Toyota sold 174,872 vehicles, Ford sold 158,354 vehicles, Honda 114,690 vehicles, Chrysler 88,900 vehicles, Nissan 71,847 vehicles, Hyundai 45,553 vehicles, Kia 29,345 vehicles, Subaru 21,839 vehicles, and Volkswagen 20,590 vehicles.
The difference from auto sales in July, 2008 are: Subaru up 34.2%, Hyundai up 11.9%, Kia up 4.7%, Ford up 1.6%, Volkswagen up 0.7%, Chrysler down 9.4%, Toyota down 11.4%, Honda down 17.3%, GM down 18.9%, and Nissan down 24.6%.

Volvo Bidding is Slowed by Ford
Ford is looking for a better price for its Volvo unit and has slowed down the process. Ford wants to wait and see how G.M. does with its sale of Opel. Ford put the unit up for sale in December as it has not been a money maker. Ford has said that they are in talks with a number of interested parties.
The New Nissan “Leaf” – Their Electric Hatchback
Nissan finally unveiled its new electric car, the “Leaf”. Nissan and Renault plan to mass market the vehicle. Both companies believe that the pure electric car is the vehicle of the future. Nissan has said that the vehicle should be available, in the states, the latter half of next year.
Nissan is returning to Yokohama, the city where it started in 1933, after having spent the past 41 years in Tokyo. They believe this to be a new chapter for their company.
