Senators Richard Blumenthal and Ed Markey are pushing for a complete recall of Takata airbags as the NHTSA open an investigation into an airbag rupture involving a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan in Missouri. Previously, the problem has occurred in older vehicles in areas of high humidity, but the most recent exploding airbag did not occur in one of the regions originally designated as high humidity and involved a newer vehicle, not currently subject to the recall.
The senators say that the fact that the root cause of the problem has not yet been determine, should be enough evidence that all vehicles with the airbags should be replaced. Additionally, the senators want the auto parts maker to release updates on data related to testing of the potentially dangerous devices. The NHTSA sent orders to VW and Takata this week requiring the companies to provide all information that could help identify a cause for the June incident.
