Chrysler has announced two safety defects affecting certain 2014 Dodge Durango and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. According to reports filed on the NHTSA website, the two problems will have approximately 260,000 owners returning their vehicles for repairs. The automobile manufacturer is expected to begin sending out notices in December.

Recall #1: An internal fault within the Occupant Restrain Control (ORC) module could result in the airbag warning lamp to illuminate and potentially disable the passive restraint system. This includes frontal airbags, seat belt pretensioners , and side airbags. According to the recall report, excess thickness of the coating used to protect the circuit board against moisture, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, could result in the coating to not cure properly. Lead salts could form and cause a short within the circuit board. Chrysler’s recall number is P67 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-643.

Recall #2: Software problems affecting the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) could disable the Electronic Stability Control (ECS) during certain driving conditions. The driver could lose control of the vehicle, increasing the chance of an accident. The problem was determined to be caused by a debris cover coming in contact with the communication lines of the printed circuit board. Chrysler’s recall number is P64 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-363.
