General Motors has announced two safety defects involving certain 2015 Chevrolet Corvette sports cars. They will be asking owners to return to a manufacturer approved repair facility to have the problems fixed. Both problems are due to manufacturing errors. The first affects the drivers side airbag and the second, the parking brake.
Due to a change in the molding process of the drivers side airbag back plate, the plate has an increased viscosity which results in lower strength. If the airbag deploys, the back plate may fracture and separate from the steering wheel completely. This problem could result in reduced occupant restraint and an increased chance of injury. GM’s recall number is 14594 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-570.
The parking brake problem could result in the vehicle rolling away unexpectedly. According to the recall report, some vehicles may have been built with only one of the rear parking brake cables fully seated and engaged. The parking brake will only operate on one of the rear brake drums resulting in a reduction in the brake’s operational capability. GM’s recall number is 14620 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-568.
