Owners of some 2013–2014 Toyota Tundra trucks equipped with a combination of non-Toyota alloy wheels and chrome plated lug nuts could experience steering vibrations and clunking noises from the wheel area. The vehicles affected were fitted with twenty inch wheel packages installed by Gulf States Toyota, Inc.
According to reports filed with the NHTSA, the compression coating used to secure the wheel lug nuts could deteriorate over time, allowing the lug nuts to loosen. The loosened nuts could cause a deformation in the nut seating area and could result in the stud fracturing completely. This recall is the result of an investigation into field reports of lug nuts loosening and causing noise and vibrations. There have been no reported accidents or injuries associated to this condition, nor have there been any reports of wheel separation.
Owners will be asked to return their vehicles to their Toyota dealership to have their vehicle inspected and replace all twenty lug nuts. For more information about the problem, contact GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074. The NHTSA campaign number is 14V-429.
