General Motors has decided that a defect relating to airbag safety exists in certain 2014 Corvette sports cars. Owners will be issued notices with instructions to return to their dealership to have the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) replaced, free of charge. The GM recall number is 14219 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V299.

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, a short circuit within the SDM may prevent the air bag and seat pretensioner from operating properly. The problem could result in the airbags not deploying, increasing the risk of occupant injury in certain types of accidents. Owners of sports cars affected by the problem may notice the airbag readiness and the service airbag lights illuminating, as well as the automatic occupant sensing passenger air bag status indicator will not illuminate.

Owners wanting more information about the safety problem can contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020.
