Connector Corrosion Affects Airbag Safety In GM Vehicles

General Motors have identified a defect relating to motor vehicle safety in certain Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, and Saturn automobile. They will be notifying owners to return their vehicles to a manufacturer approved repair facility to replace the driver and passenger side airbag wiring harness with soldered connections.

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, corrosion and/or loose crimps in the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact airbag (SIAB) wiring harness connectors could result in increased resistance. The airbag sensing system will interpret an increase in resistance as a fault and will illuminate the airbag readiness light on the instrument panel and a “Service Air Bag” message in the Driver Information Center (DIC). At first the problem will be intermittent, but over time the resistance could reach a level where the SIABs and pretensioners will not deploy during a crash.

GM’s number for this recall is 14030 and the NHTSA campaign number is 14v-118. Note: Vehicles repaired as part of Customer Satisfaction Campaign 10085 and special coverage 10335 have already had the subject condition repaired and therefore are not included in the safety recall.
