Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have opened a preliminary investigation into certain 2008 Accord sedans after receiving customer reports that the airbags unexpectedly deployed.
Complaints on the NHTSA website say the driver side or passenger side curtain airbag and the side seat mounted airbag deployed when the driver or passenger door was shut. Two of the complaints reported injuries allegedly caused by the problem.
If this preliminary evaluation should result in a recall, approximately 363,000 vehicles could be affected.
Airbags provide significant protection to automobile occupants involved in collisions by protecting them from forcefully contacting hard surfaces in the vehicle. Because airbags must deploy at a high rate of speed to be effective, airbags can also present a safety risk to automobile occupants.
If you are experiencing repeated airbag problems and a manufacturer approved repair facility is unable to fix it, your vehicle may qualify as a lemon under the California Lemon Law.
