Ford has identified two problems affecting certain 2013 Escape sport utility vehicles (SUV’s) equipped with 1.6L engines. According to reports filed with the NHTSA, the defects could lead to fuel leaks and oil leaks which could result in fire in the presence of an ignition source.

The first problem involves localized overheating of the engine cylinder head. Cracks in the cylinder head could lead to oil leaks that could ignite when it comes in contact with a hot engine surface. Ford is aware of twelve reports of fires. To correct the problem, dealers will modify the engine shielding, cooling, and control systems to allow for better engine cooling. The second problem involves vehicles that have already been repaired under Ford recall 12S35. (NHTSA campaign number 12V-336) The recall involved replacing an improperly manufactured fuel line in the engine compartment which could split and leak fuel. In some cased, the fuel line may have been installed incorrectly. The improperly installed line could chafe and leak fuel which could ignite in the presence of an ignition source. Ford dealers will inspect the fuel line and replace it as necessary. (Ford’s recall number is 13S12 and the NHTSA campaign umber is 13V0584.)
