Suzuki of America will be recalling certain 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles for a defect that could result in the airbag occupant classification system (OCS) failing over time. The recall is expected to affect approximately 200,000 vehicles. The NHTSA campaign number is 13V-405.

According to the recall report, over time the OCS sensor mat installed in the affected vehicles could fail as the result of repeated flexing of the mat from everyday use. In the event of an accident, whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child, the airbag will deploy increasing the risk of injury to children or small passengers in the front seat.

Vehicles which previously had the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat replaced under the special coverage campaigns conducted by Suzuki distributors in the United States are not affected by this recall. Sufficient part quantities are not currently available to fix all of the affected vehicles. Owners will be notified of the recall in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts become available. For more information about the problem, contact Suzuki at 1-800-255-2550.
