The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are investigating whether General Motors (GM) should expand a recall for certain Buick and Chevrolet vehicles with airbags that do not deploy properly.
Last November, GM replaced the airbags in approximately three thousand 2012 Buick and Chevrolet cars and then expanded the airbag recall in January 2013 to include another four thousand vehicles. According to the recall report filed with the NHTSA, the problem was a shorting bar in the system which could come in contact with the air bag terminals.
Because the NHTSA is not convinced that GM has identified the cause of the problem, they are working with the automobile manufacturer to see if an additional 400,000 should also be added to the recall list.
Airbag problems have become one of the top reasons for an automobile manufacturer to recall their vehicles. Because airbag manufacturers supply airbags for several automobile manufacturers, problems often result in massive recalls affecting millions of vehicles.
