Wireless company Evatran will soon be offering Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf owners an option to have wireless charging installed in their vehicles. The company is expected to announce a partnership with SPX Service Solutions, early next year, making them the official charging supplier for the Chevrolet Volt.
SPX vice president said that the companies have already been working together on its Apollo Launch Program which does testing at Google and Hertz locations and has already installed over 4,000 Level II chargers in North America for the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus, Fisker Karma, Meredes Benz, and Smart cars.
Wireless chargers use a transmitter mounted in the floor of a parking space or garage. The transmitter uses an induction coil to create an alternating electromagnetic field from within a charging base station. A receiver mounted under the car is positioned over the transmitter and takes power from the electromagnetic field and converts it back into electrical current to charge the battery. The two induction coils in proximity combine to form an electrical transformer that has an approximate 90 percent charging efficiency.
