While Tata Motors insists that it is not a recall, they are asking owners of the world’s cheapest car, the Nano, to bring in their vehicles for a free upgrade in safety equipment. The upgrade is in response to reports of mysterious circumstances which led to six cars catching fire since the car was first introduced last year. Tata Motors Group CEO and managing director Carl-Peter Forster said, “The Nano car is a very reliable and safe vehicle. The company has undertaken a second check and found that the vehicle has a safe design. After a thorough investigation by a team of internal and international experts, it was found that the fire hazard problem was specific to the cars which had the incidents.”

The company has taken up several corrective measures. They will now offer a cover on the catalytic converter to prevent the car from catching fire, as well an add a fuse in the electrical system to prevent short circuits. For any Nano cars produced before January 2010, they will also be replacing the starter motor. The company will contact owners of the Nano and perform the upgrades free of charge.

Swedish automaker, Volvo, is recalling almost 10,000 vehicles in the United States for a software problem related to drivers side airbag inflation. According to a Volvo spokesperson, the problem was discovered by a European automotive testing agency who found that the airbag deployed too late in some circumstances. The vehicles affected by the recall are:

  • 2010-2011 S80
  • 2010-2011 XC70
  • 2011 XC60
  • 2010 V70

According to Volvo, there have been about 140 complaints related to this issue. Volvo dealers will install a metal shim in the driver’s air bag clockspring wiring connector in order to remedy the problem. For any recall related questions, owners may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

Today Nissan announced that they will be recalling almost 750,000 vehicles for an electrical problem that could lead to stalling engines. According to the auto manufacturer, the electrical relay that supplies voltage to the Engine Control Module may develop silicon vapor inside which could lead to the development of oxidation on the electrical contacts. The result could be engine performance issues such as stalling. The vehicles being recalled are:

  • 2004-6 Nissan Armadas
  • 2004-6 Titans
  • 2004-6 Infiniti QX56s
  • 2005-6 Nissan Frontiers
  • 2005-6 Pathfinders
  • 2005-6 Xterras

There have been no reported accidents related to the problem. The company says it will notifying owners in early December. Customers with questions should contact the Nissan’s consumer affairs department at 1-800-647-7261 for Nissan vehicles, or 1-800-662-6200 for Infiniti vehicles.

Toyota has announced it will be recalling almost 750,000 vehicles in the United States because of leaky brake fluid lines that could lead to loss of stopping power. Toyota suspects that the brake fluid used during maintenance may have not had enough polymers as “Toyota genuine brake fluid”, which may have lead to the seals drying out. That leakage will cause the brake warning light to illuminate.

The models affected by this recall are:

  • 2005–6 Avalon
  • 2004–6 Highlander (non hybrid)
  • Lexus RX 330
  • 2006 Lexus GS 300
  • IS 250
  • IS 350

Toyota will begin sending out letters to owners urging them to schedule an appointment with a local dealer who will replace the seal at no charge to the owner. Owners wanting more information can call Toyota at (800-331-4331) or Lexus at (800-255-3987).

An intensified investigation into complaints of stalling engines has lead Toyota to recall over one million 2005-2008 Corolla sedans and Matrix wagons. The recall will also include 2005-2008 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved in the recall.

The problem is being blamed on an improperly manufactured engine control unit (ECU) which could lead to the check engine light coming on, hard shifting, the engine not starting or stalling while driving. Toyota has known about this problem since 2005 when it issued a technical service bulletin (TSB). At the time, if a customer came in with any of the above complaints, the ECU was replaced under warranty. If the warranty was up, it was left to the discretion of the dealership whether they would pay for it or not. Now that there has been an official recall the automaker will reimburse customers who paid for the fix.

Toyota and GM will mail owners notices starting in middle September. The ECU will be replaced on all of the recalled vehicles free of charge.

Ford is recalling over half a million 1998-2003 Windstar minivans because corrosion of the rear axle could lead it to break. The recall will focus on vehicles driven in areas where salt is used on the roads. After many years of vehicle service in these areas, corrosion can weaken the rear axle, making it susceptible to torsional stress.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a preliminary investigation into the problem last may, after the agency received 234 reports of rear axle fractures and two minor crashes. Ford said they have received almost 1000 complaints of alleged cracked rear axles, including seven that resulted in injuries. The company will install reinforcement brackets free of charge on recalled vehicles. The places affected by the recall are Canada, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
